George Bird Grinnell

Explorer, journalist, historian, and passionate advocate for wildlife, George Bird Grinnell stands among the most influential figures of American conservation. 

After studying natural history at Yale, Grinnell joined several expeditions into the American West during the 1870s. Among the most significant was his participation in the 1874 Black Hills Expedition. Although the journey is remembered primarily for its role in opening the Black Hills to gold prospectors, Grinnell focused on documenting wildlife, landscapes, and Native American cultures.  

He later accompanied scientific surveys exploring the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. These journeys exposed him to some of the continent’s richest ecosystems but also revealed the alarming pace of environmental destruction. Vast herds of bison, once numbering in the tens of millions, had been reduced to scattered remnants through reckless commercial hunting and lax government policies. 

Witnessing these dramatic declines convinced Grinnell immediate conservation efforts were necessary. His firsthand observations became the basis for decades of writing and advocacy. 

Grinnell found his greatest influence as editor of Forest and Stream, one of the nation’s leading outdoor magazines. Through editorials and articles, he educated readers about the dangers of overhunting and habitat loss while promoting the idea that wildlife was a public resource that should be carefully managed rather than exploited.  

In 1887, Grinnell joined Theodore Roosevelt and other prominent outdoorsmen in founding the Boone and Crockett Club. The organization promoted ethical hunting and recognized that conserving wildlife required responsible sportsmen as well as contributions from scientists and lawmakers. 

Through his writing, leadership, and advocacy, Grinnell helped cement conservation values. He believed protecting wildlife and wild places is a shared responsibility — a position that remains just as important today as it was during his lifetime.
